About this Role

Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel is responsible for the supervision, planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of a team of attorneys within the Legal Division.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a(n) CA State BAR License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.

2.  Describe your supervisory or management experience that qualifies you for the Assistant Chief Counsel position.

3.  In what ways do inclusion and belonging affect the employee experience? As a manager, what will you do to ensure that employees feel included and like they belong?

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Have the ability to:

  1. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; pay attention to detail.
  2. Ability to travel throughout the state and work long hours as required, which may include overnight stays and going to correctional facilities, state hospitals and other state facilities
  3. Change work assignments and meet timelines and deadlines with little to no notice.
  4. Analyze legal principles and precedents and apply them to complex legal and administrative problems.
  5. Present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically.
  6. Draft opinions, pleadings, rulings, regulations and legislation.
  7. Independently present difficult and complex cases in court.
  8. Plan, organize and direct the work of a staff of attorneys.
  9. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as, but not limited to a personal computer (desktop or laptop), copier and scanning equipment, word processing software, document management software, and billing software.

Have knowledge of:

  1. General legal principles and their applications.
  2. Legal research methods, court procedures, rules of evidence and procedure.
  3. Administrative law and the conduct of proceedings before administrative bodies.
  4. State and federal labor law and employment.
  5. Principles of public administration, personnel management and supervision.
  6. A manager's role in an equal employment opportunity program and processes available to meet the program objectives.

Have work experience in labor and employment law. Emphasis will be placed on labor and employment law experience.
